During the first summer after the community buyout in 2002 islanders organised the very first Music Festival as a celebration, and from this small beginning today’s festival has evolved. The music festival takes place over the last weekend in June.
Our wee festival is the smallest and most intimate traditional music festival in Scotland, as the island Village Hall where we hold our headline events has a capacity of about 150.
We have the enviable and undisputed world record of 65 minutes for a non-stop Orcadian Strip the Willow at our ceilidh when some 50 persons danced throughout the set by Heuch! at our tenth anniversary festival.
We have also hosted the largest Scottish band - Treacherous Orchestra - when there were eleven musicians on stage, as well some fantastic sets from Shooglenifty, Lau, Breabach and Blazin' Fiddles. Lorne MacDougall, our top local piper has appeared at almost every festival. We take huge pride in the fact that some of Scotland's best vocalists have graced the festival: Karen Matheson, Karine Polwart, Fiona Hunter, Siobhan Miller, Kathleen MacInnes and Mary Ann Kennedy have all appeared.
